Narrative Description of Project:

The Indus Hospital (TIH) is a tertiary care multidisciplinary hospital. It is located in the heart of Korangi, one of the densely populated areas of Karachi. It is the first paperless hospital in the country; the hospital has an e-cardiology system. Presently, various services are being offered in outpatient or inpatient categories. TIH is now expanding and will become a state-of-the-art multifaceted, tertiary care teaching hospital, a benchmark in Pakistan’s healthcare sector, in terms of its infrastructure, capacity and service delivery systems. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2022. It will transform the current 300-bed hospital facility to a 1300-bed hospital facility.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Our Staff within the Assignment:

The services of Exponent Engineers were hired for the following tasks:
  • Trip Generation/Attraction & Distribution:
    • In order to estimate the trip rates and parking ratios of future extension of TIH, Consultant collected the dataset of existing hospital and prorate it to the extension of Hospital.
    • Trip distribution is being carried out based on the actual traffic circulation in the vicinity through the help of traffic surveys conducted on various locations. On site traffic patterns were also being observed to carry out trip distribution.
  • Access & Egress Analysis:
    • Estimation of number and characteristics of trips generated / attracted by each proposed land use during respective peak hour based on surveys conducted on similar land uses in Jeddah and historic data gathered from other studies on various land uses.
    • Validation of peak trip estimations as per provided by client.
  • Parking Requirements:
    • Study traffic circulation around the project roads and intersections.
    • Estimation & validation of number of parking stalls required by the project as per Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) By-Laws.
  • Microsimulation Modeling
    • Development of micro simulation models in the project vicinity to understand how the ‘With Development’ scenario would perform in horizon years once the entire development will be operational with its full traffic.
