Environmental Impact Assessment of Revival of Karachi Circular Railway
Narrative description of Project: Government of Japan is providing technical assistance to the Government of Pakistan for revival of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR). The project is considered as one of the leading mass transportation project which will solve the current transportation problems to some extent that exist in Karachi.
While planning on the revival of KCR, JICA required that a comprehensive Environmental Assessment study need to be done in the planning stage of the project so that necessary information and data on environmental and social aspects of the project could be gathered. This EIA study extensively considered all the relevant clauses and sections of national legislations, regulations and guidelines related to the project as well as appropriate international guidelines were also considered. The recommendations would be given on the basis of project activities.
Description of Actual Services provided by your staff within the assignment: Detailed Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of the Karachi Circular Railway Revival Project included: a. To assess the existing environmental and socioeconomic conditions at and around the project site; b. Identify any environmental and social sensitivity areas; c. To identify the likely impacts of the proposed project on the natural and socioeconomic environment; conduct socio-economic survey of the area; d. propose appropriate mitigation and monitoring measures that can be incorporated into the design of the proposed activities to minimize any damaging effects or lasting negative consequences; e. Prepare an EMP identifying the procedure for implementation of the mitigations measures, monitoring of environmental conditions and management of solid wastes.
