Narrative Description of Project:

This project mainly encompasses the signalization improvement plans for various signalized junction in the city of Karachi. Most of the signals installed in the city are either non-operational or their phasing plans are out dated because of drastic increase in traffic. Hence the GoS decided to improve all major signalized junctions in the city by installing new traffic signals and also desired to provide optimized signals timings based on the existing traffic circulation patterns in the vicinity. For this reason the consultant has conducted traffic surveys on all major junctions of the city and then model those junctions on microsimulation software i.e. VISSIM (Traffic Simulation Software) to develop optimized signal phasing diagrams that an then be implemented into the field. A few new junctions have also been planned to be converted to signalized junctions from un signalized junctions based on their traffic flow patterns.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Our Staff within the Assignment:

  • The main objective of this study was to propose traffic improvements measures on various signalized junctions in the city of Karachi to make it sustainable for traffic flow operations.
  • The scope includes:
  • To design signal and propose signal timings for each junction for whole day traffic operations for current year and for future years.
  • To minimize delays on junction in Base Case i.e. 2018 for future years up to 2023.
  • To propose geometric improvements on the junction if required.
  • To recommend any (other) improvements for smooth traffic flow on the junction.
