Prefeasibility and identification of sites of Wind Power Genration Gharo Wind Corridor (areas near Karachi)
Country:
Pakistan
Location within Country:
Gharo
Name of Client:
USAID
Completion Date:
December 2010
Name of Associated Consultants, if any:
None
Narrative Description of Project:
Alternative energy is energy that does not come from fossil fuels, and thus produces little to no greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2). This means that energy produced from alternative sources does not contribute to the greenhouse effect that causes climate change. Likewise, Renewable energy is energy from renewable resources that are naturally replenished on a human timescale. Renewable resources include sunlight, wind, the movement of water, and geothermal heat. Although most renewable energy sources are sustainable, some are not. For example, some biomass sources are considered unsustainable at current rates of exploitation. Alternative Energy refers to all renewable sources and nuclear. But,Nuclear is not classified as a renewable energy source.
Alternative Energy is looked at one of the primary sources of energy in future energy scenario of Pakistan. In order to exploit potentials the Alternative Energy Development Board declared Gharo as one of the most potentials areas for Wind Energy based Power Generation area due to strong wind corridor.
In order to assist Pakistan in energy shot fall, USAID initiated a project intended to install wind turbines of 150 MW capacities at two locations within Gharo Wind Corridor. The project was based on developing prefeasibility & ranking of potential wind sites.
