Narrative Description of Project:

During the monsoon of year 2020, heavy rain caused urban flooding and disruption of Civic Life in Karachi. The Government of Pakistan and Government of Sindh had jointly decided to improve the required Civic Amenities in Karachi under Karachi Transformation Plan (KTP). Restoration of Storm Water Drains of Karachi, being one of the components of KTP aimed to mitigate the effects of flooding through cleaning work of Nullahs, all other related and ancillary activities, being executed through NDMA. For restoration of Gujjar and Orangi Nullahs (Part of Storm Water Drain Project of Karachi), Engineering Design was prepared by the Consultants hired by NDMA. For the purpose of design vetting NDMA hired Exponent Engineers to carry out value engineering and vetting of design for its soundness and economical solution.The project consisted of Trunk Sewer running parallel to the Storm water drain in the form of buried pipes. The maximum diameter of the HDPE pipes used in design was 1100mm.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Our Staff within the Assignment:

Exponent Engineers (Pvt.) Limited was appointed as Independent Engineer to:
  • Carry out Vetting and review of the design calculations and design drawings submitted by the designers. Including more than 20 urban bridges providing crossover to traffic on Major and Minor Roads in Karachi
  • Carrying out independent checks in order to verify the design implementation
  • Provide suggestions and technical advice for the betterment of the project keeping in view the budget of the project
  • Providing alternate economical solutions in the interest of the project.
  • Verification of the Bill of quantities
